For some inexplicable reason, I don't spend a lot of time at the Viktualienmarkt, but every time I go there I ask myself why I don't spend more time there. The market is open 6 days a week, and the 140 vendors offer some of the best-quality products in town. The fish monger is by far the best in Munich, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a wider selection of cheese, honey, spices, sausage, and flowers anywhere else. It's a pleasant market to stroll around and look for new artisan-quality products to sample.
Of course, there is also a beer garden smack in the middle of the Viktualienmarkt. If I were to give this beer garden a "best of" award, it would be "Best Beer Garden to visit on an Exceptionally Hot Day". The reason? The beer garden is always in the shade. All beer gardens are designed to provide respite from the heat under the broad, shady branches of, generally, chestnut or linden trees, but certain gardens accomplish this better than others. In Munich, the Viktualienmarkt is a cool, shady oasis right in the middle of the city.
Given that beer gardens are ideal for picnics, and that this beer garden sits right in the middle of a food market, it's an obvious recommendation that one could put together an exceptional picnic from the many delicacies offered in the market, and then retire to the beer garden to enjoy a cold beer.
Market open Monday to Friday 10am - 6pm, Saturday 10am - 3pm
