Despite having already worked for several years as an attorney in Washington DC, when I first moved to Munich I temporarily reverted back to a student-like lifestyle. This was not entirely by choice – I certainly made the shift into true “adulthood” years ago – but the somewhat precarious lifestyle of a Bosch Fellow is most compatible with footloose and frugal student ways (the fellowship encourages moving to a new city/job placement every 3 to 4 months and also involves lots of travel around Germany and wider Europe, and the year is much more about experiences than it is about financial recompense). So, despite having been out of university already for more than half a decade, I found myself living in a student apartment complex (with a shared kitchen! It was so not for me- I got out of there and into my own apartment as quickly as possible). The one good part about this arrangement, however, was that I lived right above Stachus Passage, in the heart of Munich.
Stachus is the underground passage at Karlsplatz, and it is an ideal place to grab a quick bite if you are out and about around the city, shopping, running errands, or just playing tourist. Think of it like a good mall food court (minus the large seating area) with a variety of fast, and convenient lunch options. It houses some of Munich’s most well-known and well-liked chains: e.g. Kaimug (Asian fusion), Dean & David (deli), Pizza Panini, Vinzenzmurr (German butcher with daily lunch options), Pommes Freunde (French fries with dozens of options of dipping sauces), Brezelina (pretzel sandwiches), and of course Starbucks. So you're pretty much guaranteed to find something you like, and if you're with a group, everyone can go their own way and pick up something.
So Stachus is the place I will send you for ultra convenience - always an important thing to know about any city.
The Stachus passage also happens to have one of my favorite Swiss chocolate shops: Läderach Chocolatier. I’m into their many varieties of chocolate bark – I used to sometimes as a special treat pick up a bag of their “chocolate scraps” (the broken-off bits that they packaged together and sold at a discount) on the way home from work. I haven’t been there in ages though, so I’m not sure if they still sell the chocolate scraps. Regardless, it’s worth paying full price as it is excellent chocolate. So after lunch, maybe make a detour over to Läderach...
