The destination was a Landhotel (a countryside hotel and restaurant) outside Bad Tolz called Moarwirt. I'd been there a couple of times before, and I would pretty much be happy to go there every weekend if I could. The food is all local and organic, and is an inspired mix of traditional Bavarian cuisine and more modern gastronomy. The menu is seasonal, and everything coming out of the kitchen is homemade and of the best quality. There are a few vegetarian options on the menu, and the kitchen was able to make modifications to accommodate my vegan friend.
Yes, the service is excellent (I find that, often, outside the city, German waiters and waitresses can be incredibly pleasant and helpful... maybe the slower pace of the job keeps them happy and therefore they're more likely to be friendly?)
I keep thinking that Moarwirt would be a fantastic location for a weekend getaway. The hotel is extremely cozy, the food is the best, there's a large terrace with a beautiful view of the mountains, and Bad Tolz is a charming town surrounded by excellent hiking trails and some of Germany's most pristine and beautiful rivers and lakes.
Oh! And it's even great if you have kids. The hotel has a playground and even a large trampoline on the grounds to keep the kids entertained.
