The longer I live in Munich, the more I come to appreciate its restaurant scene. At first, I was underwhelmed. It seemed that while Bavarian cuisine was (quite naturally) widely available, it was difficult to find good alternatives. Who knows why exactly, I'd like to think that the restaurants have legitimately improved in the last few years, but these days I have no problem finding a good place to meet up with friends for dinner.
Take Kalypso. This restaurant opened up (re-opened?) a couple of months ago in Schwabing. My friends live around the corner and had received a neighborly voucher for free mezze if they popped in and gave the place a try; I, of course, had no problem going along. That first time there we were extremely impressed. The service was excellent, and the mezze outstanding. In fact, the mezze platter for two – including calamari, lentils, stuffed peppers, tzatziki, two other dips, vegetable patties, and haloumi – is easily enough for a meal for two, or as a starter can serve an even larger party. The pita is fresh-baked and comes to your table straight out of the oven, and my friend seemed to relish his souvlaki plate.
We returned last night, and the place was hopping. Obviously, its reputation has gotten out. Turns out it was just as good the second time around, and thus will remain on my list of go-to spots in Munich.
