Hey Luigi

Does anyone else always think of Super Mario Brothers whenever they hear the name "Luigi"?  I can’t avoid getting a vision of that overalls-clad, green-shirted, friendly, moustachioed character.  And then the song starts going through my head – doop doop doooo badoop doop dee doop doop… it must be a natural outcome of growing up in the 80’s/90’s.  Ok, so I should probably preface this review by saying that I am inclined to like this restaurant just based on the fact that it’s called Hey Luigi.  But, that aside, it really is one of my favourite restaurants in Munich.  Mostly because the salads are amazing.  One doesn’t naturally think about huge, fresh, bright salads when they think about German cuisine, but I am grateful and happy to report that there are several restaurants in Munich that make exceptional salads, and which I would even classify as salad destinations.  Hey Luigi is one of those restaurants.  It doesn’t serve only salad- in fact, the rest of the menu, including several excellent pasta options, outnumber the salads.  But those few salads on the menu?  Those it does just right.  The dressing is sweet and tart, and somehow different from what you would make at home, and the toppings are, for example, perfectly-grilled duck and fresh mango slices, or melty goat cheese with huckleberries.  Delicious.

Hey Luigi also has a fully-stocked bar and can turn into a night-out destination (usually as a pre-club spot) on Friday and Saturday nights.  It’s dark and slightly broody, and they don’t take reservations for after 8PM.

I've found the staff at Hey Luigi to be very accommodating to special requests – a friend once celebrated her birthday there and they had absolutely no problem with us bringing in our own cake, and provided plates and silverware for serving the cake, without assessing an extra charge.  It’s also absolutely fine to just come for drinks, and not to eat.  Basically, Hey Luigi is a perfect cross-over between bar and restaurant, and fits all kinds of situations.
