I'm back in Munich and I have a hankering for a good Italian lunch. Alas, Feinkost Grasso is still closed for the holidays (Munich, I appreciate the extended amount of holidays that allows me not to work and enjoy life, but I kind of wish everyone else had to work so that I'm not inconvenienced when I want to go to the grocery store, or out to lunch. Sigh. If only the world was designed entirely to accommodate my whims.)
Anyway, Feinkost Grasso is probably my favorite lunch spot in Munich. It’s located on Mailingerstrasse in Neuhausen, which is a perfectly charming and slightly-off-the-beaten-path (but only very slightly) part of Munich. On a sunny weekday afternoon, if you happen to be in the neighborhood, I recommend stopping here for lunch before wandering over to Rotkreuzplatz to shop at the farmer’s market or to just soak in the casual ambience of one of Munich’s nicest public squares.
Feinkost Grasso is a small Italian deli and wine bar that serves excellent pasta dishes, antipasti, and other daily specials. I almost always order their mixed pasta plate of the day (you get to try three or four different types of pasta – chef’s choice), and it comes with a big house salad and bread. The fresh-squeezed juice, which changes every day based on what is in season, is also really popular. And they have an extensive wine list.
I recommend coming here for lunch, or for an after-work glass of wine with some cheese and other cold antipasti, but you can also pop by to pick up fresh ingredients to prepare Italian food at home or if you are having a cocktail-style get-together with friends. Be warned that it’s not really a dinner spot – they close by 8PM – and it gets busy at lunch, so expect to share a table with others. But that’s the usual Munich way, so don’t let that dissuade you.
