So last week, before leaving for vacation, I realized suddenly, oh crap I haven't been to Balla Beni yet and summer's almost over! So I hopped on my bike, and off I went. When the sun is shining and I'm spending a weekend afternoon cycling around Munich, I almost always feel compelled to stop by Balla Beni for a summer afternoon ice cream. I've tried several ice cream and gelato shops around Munich, and so far none are in the same league as Balla Beni. My favorite flavor is chocolate ginger, which is a rich, dark chocolate spiked with ginger. The ginger tastes so fresh and real - there are no artificial tastes with this gelato. In fact, the milk and mint almost tastes like the mint leaves were just plucked from the earth minutes before being mixed into the gelato, which has a base flavor reminiscent of my favorite Italian gelato, fior di latte.
Balla Beni is just a small take-out window with a limited selection of flavors (around 10-12 options, including several sorbets). There's usually a couple new - and always interesting - flavors, and the old favorites (chocolate, chocolate ginger, milk and mint, etc.) stay in constant rotation. When you order a scoop of ice cream, you are always offered an extra "taste" of a second ice cream, which is a fun way to explore the new flavors on offer.
One last little tip - when I talk about Balla Beni I also extend my love to Jessas, which also serves the ballabeni ice cream.
(Just look for the huge line on the corner of Theresienstrasse and Türkenstrasse)
